Biography
James became enamored with engraving while studying under printmaker Gerry Wubben at McNeese State University, Lake Charles, LA. He later studied printmaking at Bradley University, Peoria, IL, with Oscar Gillespie and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida where he worked with Robert Mueller. He has been a part of group exhibitions in over ten countries and across the United States. Recently, he has given lectures and demonstrations at Nicholls State University and the University of Kansas. In 2007 and 2009, he and Wubben coordinated successful national portfolio exchanges with the technical theme of engraving. His teaching experience includes Illinois Central College, Peoria, IL; University of Florida, Gainesville, FL; Lamar University, Beaumont, TX; and McNeese State University. Currently, Ehlers teaches at Emporia State University, Emporia, KS, which is the only school in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Engraving Arts. The program focuses on metal engraving and printmaking, as well as engraving wood, glass, and many non-traditional materials.
