Course Description
Originally taught by Diane Scalese and Grand Master instructor Ron Smith, Diane now shares the specialized techniques of Flare Cut engraving. The style uses fewer graver cuts that are wide, deep, and specially shaped to create a dramatic sculpted look in less time. The engraver will gain a valuable technique for a wide variety of metals.

Prerequisites
You must have completed a Basic course* or have instructor approval prior to enrollment. Intermediate course should be the same area of study as Basic course.

Course Objectives
- Study design and structural elements for attractive Flare Cut layouts
- Understand negative and positive space in balanced designs
- How to intersect, overlap, and intertwine elements
- Tool theory for the Flare Cut
- Specialized tool shaping methods
- Wire inlay (demonstration only)
- A variety of cuts: bright, leaf, cap, closure, and hollow
- Minimizing burs and rough edges
