Course Description
This course is currently not open for enrollment in 2010.
This course is for the student who wants to add dimensional designs to ivory, bone, horn, and other organic hard materials. The class covers learning to carve in a variety of border styles, natural forms such as leaves and vines and scenic images in both low and high relief styles. Working on bone, horn and ivory, each student will use the microscope, various hand tools and the full selection of GRS power tools. We will explore ways to utilize relief carving to create beautiful art or enhance other items such as jewelry, knife handles, gun grips and powder horns.

  • Effective removal of background
  • Use of depth to control and enhance shading
  • Modeling, sculpting with various bits
  • Preparation of material and design transfer
  • Utilizing microscope and power tools
  • Texturing and smoothing techniques
  • Finishing details

Prerequisites
Prior experience in carving is a plus but not a requirement. This is a GRS basic level class.
