Course Description
The focus of this class is drawing, perfecting, and then engraving ornamental acanthus leaf and scrollwork designs. Drawing these elements on paper is a significant portion of class time. After practicing and perfecting leaf and scrollwork, students scale and apply the art elements to metal for hand engraving. Emphasis is on fine, three-dimensional shading, semi-relief, and relief engraving in basic, intermediate, and advanced designs.

Course Objectives
- Learn to draw, shade, and engrave all levels of traditional ornamental designs
- Take designs from drawing to engraving
- Achieve the rich look of three-dimensional engraving with carefully cut fine-line shading
- Semi-relief engraving with stippled background
- Deep relief engraving with background removal
