Course Description
This intermediate course is designed to teach the student how to take a simple scene with animals, people, landscape, or other elements and turn them into bold German style deep relief images. Using GRS power assisted handpieces and a few specially sharpened gravers, students will learn how to remove backgrounds as quickly and uniformly as possible. There will be time spent on modeling, sculpting, texturing, and smoothing of cuts and graver marks. The end result is to create something bold and beautiful.

Prerequisites
Applicants must have completed a GRS Basic Engraving course or have instructor approval. Students must be able to sharpen basic gravers and make controlled engraving cuts with GRS pneumatic handpieces. Contact GRS for additional details.

- Introduce the tools and different tool geometry used during the course
- The in-and-out of deep relief cutting
- Discuss several methods of background removal
- Shading by using coarse stones
- Maintaining uniform backgrounds
- Tips on using a combination of relief, bulino, and dots
- Visualizing and cutting correct feature angles
- Blending and smoothing of graver marks
- Moving and sculpting metal by impact
- Cutting sharp vertical edges
- Tips on progressive cutting of figures
