Course Description
This course teaches basic stone setting in an understandable way using techniques that increase quality, save time, and accelerate learning. Each student will work with a stereo zoom microscope and GRS power tools to complete a versatile range of basic settings. The curriculum includes special stone setting processes that reduce the physical strain, mental stress, and fatigue that occur with other methods. This course is designed for people who have never set stones and for those who want a better foundation for basic stone setting.

  • Shaping tools and bench grinder operation
  • Surface preparation
  • Layout and design
  • Transferring designs to a surface
  • Line cutting techniques

  • Business practices and pricing work (varies by instructor)
  • Layout techniques for round stones
  • Round stone fitting and seat preparation
  • Basic prong, flush, bead, and channel setting techniques using round stones
  • Prong setting for oval stones
  • Utilizing the microscope and specialized GRS workholders for stone setting
  • Reducing and avoiding work stress
