Course Description
This course is a natural next step for the knifemaker who has taken the GRS/ABS Basic Engraving Class. The main focus of this course is the ever popular application of gold inlay decoration and designs. Knife collectors have coined the phrase “ABS Bowie” as a lot of knife makers have produced and sold Bowie knifes that are similar in design. Each student will be responsible for bringing their own “ABS Bowie,” totally finished except for the heat treating step and final assembly. This requirement will make it much easier to hold the parts individually for engraving, and by not having the blade heat treated will allow gold inlay on the spine of the blade. Final assembly will take place at home.

Course Objectives
  • Tool sharpening review
  • Gold inlay demonstration
  • Using the proper size gold wire
  • Tools used including depth of cut
  • Design layout including methods of transfer of the design

  • Cutting the spine of the blade for inlay and decoration
  • Knife guard embellishment
  • Ferrule accents and selective gold inlay
